The Cherry Orchard was produced tocelebrate the centennial anniversary ofthe play that has determined the overall tone for the entire 20th century drama. The director,Adolf Shapiro, asked himself aquestion: where the characters ofalegendary play could possibly live nowadays, when their cherry orchard has been long gone. The answer tothe question was inthe material world created onstage bythe set designer,David Borovsky. The only place where Chekhovian characters could possibly live is onstage. The waves ofthe stage curtain with the famous Seagull insignia, curving and making smooth corners, becomes home tothe homeless wanderers, who are infact the shadows ofthe past come tolife onstage.
